For advanced planning, the 2018 Wood Memorial High School Commencement will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018, at 7:00pm. The ceremony will be held in the high school gymnasium.
Recently Wood Memorial art instructor Pat Douglas learned of the story of 5 – year old Ryland Ward, a survivor of the Sutherland Springs, Texas church attack earlier in the year. She shared this story with her high school and junior high school students, who then went into action and created Christmas cards, sharing photographs of family pets, in an effort to bring some joy and smiles to Ryland’s Christmas season.
Ms. Douglas shared that once she told her junior high students of Ryland’s situation that one individual reached into a pocket and pulled out $7.00 to donate to him. Wow! Great compassion.
Ryland remains hospitalized, recovering from the injuries he suffered during the event, and according to his family, is expected to remain there through Christmas. During this senseless act, Ryland lost his step – mother and two sisters.
The act of kindness, and selfless commitment to work to bring smiles to others, is driven by a loving and caring heart. Ms. Douglas and her students have provided the embodiment for the culture Wood Memorial is striving to establish among students, staff, school – community, and on our campus.
We can all follow the lead of this outstanding instructor and her wonderfully compassionate students by reaching out to Ryland and his family. They would enjoy receiving a Christmas Card, perhaps with a picture of children enjoying their pets, in an effort to brighten one boys holiday season.
Those interested in sending a Christmas card may do so by mailing to the following address:
